(2.6.06) Spencer: Orthographic Front and Side Views

Additional Concepts:

Backstory:

The penguin population is in peril. Across the Antarctic, entire glaciers are mysteriously disappearing, and the penguins fear that their sacred breeding grounds may soon too be desolated.

Following the dispersal of several ill-fated scout parties, the penguins have discovered that an alien race has landed in the heart of the Antarctic, setting up massive ice-processing facilities in an attempt to meet the ever-increasing demand for snow cones back on their home planet. Guarded by sophisticated automated defense systems and trained, armed sea lions, an unaided penguin would have little chance of infiltrating the alien stronghold. In response, the antarctic penguins have banded together to deal with the threat. Using scrap equipment from a nearby abandoned research facility, the penguins construct a formidable biomechanical utility and jet pack that could potentially allow a single penguin to enter the evil alien snow cone factory and proceed to render it inoperable.

That penguin is Spencer.

Spencer has done little in his life to set himself apart from the other penguins. He's lived a difficult life with his cohorts in the sub-zero temperatures and harsh winds of the Antarctic climate, but it's a life he doesn't mind living. He likes having the clear, distinct goals that his life provides, despite the extreme challenges they lead him and the other penguins through. It's the consistency that he's most attached to. While a difficult life, it's a predictable one, and he welcomes each new year hoping only that nothing unexpected forces him to change his established routine.

While he's very capable of thinking for himself, Spencer prefers to leave the majority of the communal decisions to other penguins. Spencer was not involved in the initial decision to create the utility pack, but was happy to offer assistance in gathering materials once it had been decided. He likes his way of life, and has developed a spite toward those who are trying to change it. Ultimately, Spencer was chosen to wear the pack more because it fit him well than anything else. That, and most of the other likely penguins for the job avoided the duty, knowing the extreme odds against any penguin who dared enter the alien factories. Spencer's willingness to accept any challenge handed to him along with his attachment to his current way of life made him an ideal candidate for the mission.

    Situation Response:

Your character has come up to a mechanical toll booth and finds he has no money.
There are cars behind him lining up and honking. What happens next?
How does your character respond to the situation?

As Spencer cruises across the ice-laden landscape in one of a research buggies the penguins were able to salvage, he realizes that he has just turned into a crevice leading directly to an automated toll booth. He knows he doesn't have any money in the car, but he doesn't worry too much about it at this point. He's pretty sure there's another chance to exit ahead. In any case, he's in the middle of the Antarctic, and the chances of another car coming up behind him, he thinks, is slim. But, as his luck would have it, the next exit is closed, and as he glances in his mirror and prepares to turn back the way he came, he sees another car closing in behind him, and another one after that, and, against all logical odds, a third and fourth behind that. Spencer sees nothing to do but continue on to the toll booth, though at a rather slow pace, as he's trying to determine what he will do when he arrives.

At the toll booth, Spencer finally stops. By this time, the cars behind him have caught up, and they press in close behind. He glances down at his dashboard, and then looks over to the toll booth, with which he is presently becoming increasingly annoyed. Several blasts from a horn makes him keenly aware of the now seven cars lined up behind him. He peers back only slightly apologetically, angry at whoever's honking at him, and then looks once again at the wretched toll booth and its mechanical arm stretched across the roadway in front of him. Spencer has no quarrel with the humans, but he also has a huge destructive potential strapped to his back, and he won't lie; the temptation is there.

Sitting back in his seat, he lets the sounds of the cars behind him fade from his mind momentarily and inhales deeply. His engine, he notices, has stopped while he's been sitting there. He hadn't notice, but he's not surprised. As he restarts the small research buggy, he takes another breath, and then, ever so diligently, he begins maneuvering the vehicle toward the side of the road. His car is small enough, he figures, that it should be able to fit off to the side of the road well enough for the others to pass. The maneuver is difficult, though, because of the driver behind him, who is constantly pushing forward with his car. Making his final turn, Spencer makes a point to accidentally scratch that car's bumper, and he waves in response to the driver's gesture as he passes by him. As the last of the group pushes past the gate, Spencer revs his engine and manages to slide under before it closes once again. He doesn't think there should be a toll booth there, anyway.
