Welcome To My Home...
September 16, 2002Nineteen and Counting I'm back at Fullerton after a smattering of mini birthday celebrations over the weekend. Thank you everybody for your kind birthday wishes. And thank you both Islands and Fridays for the free desserts. (Yes, it was a weekend full of eating - I needed to fill myself up sufficiently to last another couple weeks up here). The Unreal Tournament 2003 demo (they seem to be a bit confused as to what year it is) came out last Saturday - an unfortunate time for me, however, considering the amount of math homework I needed to finish after returning to campus. It is, for all purposes, exactly the same as the original Unreal Tournament. I consider the demo to be more of a four level addition to my full UT rather than a part of a whole separate game. The capture the flag map included in the demo plays very well, but the other maps are just average. Of course, they look absolutely amazing (most notably the CTF map). But gameplay wise, nothing has really changed. That's not necessarily a bad thing: I liked the original a lot. It just doesn't seem to warrant me buying it again. As far as the actual differences, they've changed the looks of some of the guns and now give you an assault rifle/grenade launcher (!) to start with as opposed to a handgun, and they've replaced the Ripper with something that seems (to me) to be identical to the sniper rifle. Also worth mentioning is the new game type: Bombing Run, which, in theory is like football with guns, and plays like a one-flag capture the flag. I was able to fix my Quicktime problem by reverting back to Quicktime 5. In the process, I found two very well-done parodies (Mac Gamer and Kristofer Straub) of Apple's stupid Switch ad campaign. (I actually can't figure out why they're still making these ads, since they seem to serve no purpose other than to piss everbody off - Mac people are portrayed as complete idiots who are probably still figuring out how to turn a computer on, and PC users are blatantly told that they are inferior for not being one of these dimwits.) Oh, and if you haven't heard, the iPod is (finally) available for PC's, eliminating the only real reason to switch to a Mac. ![]()
September 16, 2002Those Funny Mac People... Those funny mac people. Thanks for those links, that's a good laugh. I never really noticed them until now. You just can't beat that music playing in the background. But when you think about it, if you're gonna have a public computer, you might as well make it a mac. Sure, it may not be compatible with... well...anything except word, but it's harder to screw up : P And as far as the IPOD goes, look at it from a marketing perspective: Make the IPOD - Windows Compatible: -Get lotsa people to buy a $400 dollar product Keep the IPOD - Mac only -Get a couple people to switch to Macs -Get lotsa people to buy a $400 dollar product and patch it so that it's Windows compatible -Victor
September 16, 2002Re: Those Funny Mac People... Yes, us Mac people are very funny. So we're not compatible with... well, everyone else, but why should we be? We're rebels: independent free spirits who don't want to spend more time figuring out our computers than enjoying it. I admit, Macs are for stupid people. Heck, I'm stupid. I can't figure out my computer worth anything. And yes, those ads are quite stupid. Sorry about that. But anyway, I believe that Mac users are awesome in making their own little niche in the Windows dominated world. If you don't like it, then don't use it. Leave Macs to the stupid people. By the way, Vic... have you forgotten that I use a Mac? ~Jocelyn
September 17, 2002The Evils of Advertising Now, now... I never said Mac people are stupid; I merely gave my very real interpretation of a very flawed (and ill-planned) ad campaign. See how effective it is, too. Now Apple's got their own supporters thinking they're stupid. ![]()
September 17, 2002I Haven't Forgotten... No Jocelyn, I haven't forgotten that you use a mac. And no, you're not stupid either. Despite my obvious bias, I truly do support macs. They are unmatched in the PC world at computer graphics, programming, and video editing due to their processor architecture and memory handling. Frankly, for a lot of the stuff I like to do, I'd probably be wanting to be using a mac too. But I simply prefer the speed and compatibility of a PC. -Victor |
