Welcome To My Home...
October 26, 2002Our Own America I haven't written anything about the Washing DC area sniper. This is mainly because I didn't really want to think about him, nor grace him with my words. Now the police finally think they've caught him, which I'm sure you've already heard. I won't express my thoughts or feelings about the actual sniper, because, unless you're a psycopathic maniac, they are likely very similar to your own thoughts. Plus, I'd like to keep this site kid-friendly, and most of my feelings regarding this individual are not. I will, however, comment on some of the other rather annoying issues brought to light by these events. As everyone now knows, violent video games are at the core of all evil. So, it makes sense, then, that there would be a connection between some killer saying "I am God" and invincibility cheats in video games known commonly as "God Mode." Right? Of course not. Any half-witted banana slug can see that these two things have absolutely no logical connection whatsoever. Yet, the media fed this crap to the public as the truth, saying this "lead" was being looked into. As if it wasn't enough that they had to constantly re-assure the sniper that the police had absolutely no leads on him and that whatever he was doing was working great, now they needed to announce that police were looking into leads so obviously irrelevant that it made them look utterly ridiculous. I'll bet this made the sniper think twice before choosing his next victim, knowing that video game outlets were now being carefully monitored. And it's not like the police did much to counter this bumbling image set by the media. I'm not sure what they planned to accomplish by asking the sniper to call them back other than show their own incompetence. Not to mention the blatantly poor judgement on the parts of both police officials and the media of informing the world of every measure police took towards finding the shooter. When they started using military satallite survellance, the sniper knew. Whenever the police started to look into another lead, he knew. Now, I could be drastically mistaken in my understanding of how the police and media work, but it seems to me that there are some serious problems. Sure, the public has a right to know the facts, but there should be a line drawn where careless reporting can cause serious harm. Now that the suspected sniper has been caught, the whole thing's taken another turn. I really hate to get caught up in these stupid racial issues, but when I see such idiotic articles as this, I really can't help but comment. Apparently, several African-American people (enough to make it in the news, anyway) are shocked and appalled that the sniper is Black. It just makes me sick that these select Black activists, who are supposedly fighting for equal rights, have so little tolerance, themselves. The obvious implication here is that the race of the shooter is shocking because only a white person would do something so horrible. Black people, on the other hand, "just don't do that." Luckily, the article does include at least one intelligent response: "Madmen, like bigots, come in all colors." Still, some African-Americans are concerned that the act of this one madman will make people form negative stereotypes for all African-Americans. As Chuck Stone comments in the article, "When the killing started, African-Americans said, 'Oh, we hope they're not black.'" I would like to be able to say that this concern is unfounded and completely rediculous. I would like to state with confidence that any rational person would see that the insane acts of one individual has absolutely nothing to do with anybody else in whatever social or racial group. Sadly, however, I know that this is not the case. It seems, from past experience, that this country has a distinct lack of rational people. After all, I'm still saying, "Oh, I hope he didn't play video games." Isn't that the same type of stereotyping that we've been trying so hard to avoid? ![]()
October 26, 2002For Our Feature Presentation Starcraft: Ghost now has a gameplay video available. It looks very nice. I can't speak for the non-Starcraft fans, but the game looks like it could turn out to be one of the better 3rd person action/adventure games. Too bad I'll probably never play it. I can't say I'm as excited as a monkey on crack, but the newest BMW film is rather good. It's called "Hostage." Check it out. I sure wish they'd use DivX, though. Those Quicktime files can get pretty hefty. ![]()
October 26, 2002America's Snipers I remember reading it on google-news when the snipers had gotten caught. Two things hit my mind: some idiot is going to make a connection to violent computer games, and some idiot is gonna make a racial connection. I just kinda sighed and prepared for the impending flood of stupidity. It just makes me that much more grateful to have been raised in diverse and open-minded community so that I can come to these conclusions. I have to give props to the justice system however. A lot of times, they give minors a little bit too much slack. I do understand their argument that minors may not be fully aware of the consequences of their actions, but I've always felt 18 is a bit forgiving. One of the guys was 17, and they've put on the table life without parole. I heartily agree because I believe he was very much aware of what he was doing. If you imagine yourself in his position, focusing your crosshairs over a child's head from the back of a car... you're gonna think a little bit before you pull that trigger. As for the FBI and city police, perhaps they didn't approach it quite as well as they should have, but there's a couple things to take into consideration. There's never really been a recent sniper spree, so their handbook on how to deal with it is outdated. They pretty much bumbled their way through as they figured out what worked and what doesn't anymore. Another thing I'm seeing as a possible explanation is that in the beginning, it was quickly tied to terrorist actions; therefore there was some guy deep in the FBI asking everyone else, "How did not see this one coming either?" all causing much more stress and bitterness. The FBI has gotten a lot of bad rap for their dealings with terrorism and a lot of changes have taken place since 9/11. They also were under an extraordinary amount of pressure to prove themselves worthy again in this situation and I have to say, if I was in their position, I probably would have acted the same way. -Victor
October 27, 2002Friendly Public Service Announcement Set your clocks back one hour: Daylight Savings Time has once again come to an end. As if it wasn't getting dark early enough already. In the process, I've somehow managed to switch my watch to military time. Bah. Oh well, it's a better system anyway. Also: This recent article now indicates that both sniper suspects may face the death penalty. The report should also eliminate much of the doubt that may have existed regarding his guilt. ![]()
October 27, 2002Yeah. That'll Do It. Now we're getting to the root of the problem. This oughta stop future snipers. GOSH. How can there be so many IDIOTS in the world? That's the last from me on that topic for now. It's time I sit back and bask in the idiocy. I just wanted to get my severe disrespect for Walmart out there first. ![]()
October 28, 2002Walmart, you moron Walmart, you moron. Have you even played those games you're taking off the shelf? God...this is what happens when you lets recessive gened people make decisions. But hey, who goes to Walmart to buy computer games anyway? They all come in those crappy little boxes. grrrr. -Victor |
