Welcome To My Home...
November 19, 2002You Going To Answer That? My music teacher stood at the front of the class describing early twentieth century music, when, to the everyone's great horror, he was abruptly interrupted by the opening measures of Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyrie". Such a musical interlude was hardly in the spirit as Wagner had intended - rather, the music presented itself in the shrill, synthesized sound of a cell-phone ring tone. The professor stopped speaking mid-sentence, and the room fell dead silent. This had never happened before (the cell phone or the silence). For the briefest instant, we sustained this uncomfortable atmosphere until the echoes of the offending sound ceased to continue, and the incident seemed as but a memory. At this precise moment, it happened again. The unthinkable had finally happened: somebody had let his cellphone progress to the second ring. A wave of unease swept across the room. By this time, nobody dared so much as make a move towards his bag and, by doing so, mearly acknowledge the fact (regardless of his guilt or innocence) that he was in possession of a device even capable of such a disturbance. Everyone sat staring dead ahead at the professor (incidentally, this had never happened before, either). We all witnessed the expression on the professor's face rapidly transform from mild annoyance to full-out anger. It would be better now to just let the thing finish ringing than to admit to being the cause of the noise. The professor glared straight at us, menacingly eyeing everyone at once. (This is not as difficult a feat as it may sound, however, since about eighty percent of the class left after taking the quiz). He looked ticked. "You going to answer that?" he said, possibly attempting to hide his anger with subtle humor. It didn't work; his words came out sounding like a threat, as if he dared one of us to produce a cellphone and reveal ourself as the culprit. The third ring. This is unheard of; people were starting to worry. Most of the students had sufficiently assessed the situation by this point, and as the last notes of that dreaded melody faded, nearly everyone in the class was looking back and forth between his classmates and neighbors as if to prove that he had no idea from where the sounds were originating. Some even ventured to vocalize a declaration of immunity, asking "Who's phone is that?" and twisting their heads at unnatural angles so as to view the entire room. The human face can convey hundreds of recognizable emotions, not all of which are as easy to describe as anger or annoyance. Thus, you will need to imagine for yourself my professor's priceless expression as Wagner's melody started for it's fourth repetition, because it was at this time that he realized the truth. Reaching into his jacket pocket, he produced a small phone, still in mid-ring. "Oh..." He smiled. "It's mine." ![]()
November 19, 2002Making Plans You might recall my discussion concerning Las Campanas taquitos and how they may not be the best investment in the way of frozen consumable products. I admit, I am prone to exaggerate at times, and perhaps my judgement of Las Campanas taquitos was a bit rash. In fact, I've found that they aren't a bad choice if you're running low on food. Heat a few of those puppies up after classes, and your stomach will be so messed up that you may not feel like eating anything else for a couple days. It's economical. Phew. Class registration. This, my friends, is the reason I could never become a counselor (That and the fact that I'd probably psycologically scar anyone coming to me for help). If you're not up to date with my site, WhoToTake.com is a decent teacher rating site. As for me, I've got two tentative schedules, so far. I'm hoping that classes don't fill up before it's my turn to register, but I'm trying to plan for that a bit, anyway. One schedule (the one I like best right now) puts me in three art classes, history, and logic (logic as opposed to critical thinking). 9:00-2:15 on MW, 8:30-3:45 TR, nothing F). I think life drawing is only 1 unit (although it's still a lot of class time), but there's some confusion there. My other scheduele has 1 art class, bio and its lab, history, and either film music (I want to take it but it doesn't count for anything) or political science (need for GE). 9-11 MF, 9-2W, 8:30-11:15 TR. Don't let me screw myself over for next semester. Jump in with suggestions. ![]()
November 21, 2002I have 'til 10 tomorrow I have some questions for people. Right now, I'm registered for four 3 unit classes (MWF: hist, political sci; TR: drawing, logic). Since I couldn't get the bio and bio lab classes I was planning (and therefore am not taking a lab next semester, as I thought I would be), I'm thinking about adding another MWF class, but I'm not sure if I should - and then I'm not sure what class. How many units should I be taking this semester? Would it be better to take another GE class (psyc) or a class that sounds interesting but doesn't count towards anything (film music or creative writing)? If I can't get psyc (I need to move my hist and pol sci classes around, and those times may fill up during my period of indecision or may already be full) is it worth taking a class that doesn't count towards anything? My registration window ends tomorrow night (11/22) at 10pm (or 22:00, in case any of you also managed to screw up your watch during the switch from daylight savings time). So if you have an opinion on the matter, express it quickly, please. And why don't you have AIM, Julie? ![]()
November 21, 2002Schedule crisis Sorry that I did not reply to your earlier pleas for help, but I haven't checked your site for awhile. (And no I don't have AIM, but I do have e-mail, and why don't you have a phone. Seriously though if you have a question send it directly to my e-mail, I check daily) About scheduling, what you have sounds fine. I actually would try to take another class because you might be bored if you don't have enough and then motivation for all of your classes will drop. I would suggest taking something interesting to you. I always try to schedule one fun class a semester, if it counts for something thats great, if not and it sounds interesting take it anyways. You are there to get an education. You do have to remember though that extra classes that don't count for anything are part of "extra-curricular" activities, so you should always have a full load of relevant classes before adding your fun class. Otherwise it will take you forever to graduate. In your case I would definately suggest taking another class. I generally take 15-20 units a semester and I think that you could also handle this load. Another art class, a creative writing class all sound interesting. I would also suggest having a back-up plan. For instance if you show up for the creative writing class and you can't stand the professor or the syllabus, DROP IT. Remember its your fun class, don't tie yourself to a class that you won't want to go to in a month. Take it from me, if you dread going to class, the class is no longer fun. So if that happens and you still want to take a fun class, you may have to try crashing something else. Thats where your back-up comes in. I would also suggest looking at the PE classes offered at your school they are ussually only one unit and can be a lot of fun. (its not like high school PE). So in your case I would add a fun class and a PE class. If you think you are going to have too heavy of a schedule make one of your classes credit/no credit (Not if you think it might fall under your major requirements), that way if you don't like the class you don't have to spend a lot of time on it. Thats all the advice I have now. If you have more questions before your 10 pm deadline send me an e-mail, I'll check tonight. -Julie Your all knowing sister PS If anyone out there likes mandarians, Safeway (VONS) has satsuma mandarians on sale and they are wonderful. Great as a healthy snack. (I think you may need a few healthy snack ideas Raymond)
November 21, 2002AIM is my phone That and email, anyway. And rest assured, you would have found an email from me if I didn't get any replies. =) Thank you for your input. Unfortunately, creative writing was full, but I decided to take film music. After all, that is one of the reasons I took this music class I'm in now... might as well make it worth something. I'll take psych some other semester. Any further suggestions, ideas, or enlightenment are certainly still welcomed. ![]() Perpetually confused PS. Hmmm... mandarians sound good... I haven't had fruit in a while. But it looks like I won't need to be making a trip to the grocery store this week. My brownies should hold me over until I go home. And what's this about you thinking I need a healthier diet? =)
November 21, 2002College Requirements Suck My general strategy is to get rid of universal college reqs first, then the general major reqs (in the event I wanna change majors to something related), then major-specific reqs. Most of us wanna minor in a side interest, which generally means ~7 courses here, also meaning all your extra spots are filled with minor-specific reqs. College is tons of fun isn't it? -Victor Mandarians vs. brownies. hmmmm. I live on pastrami sandwiches. My roommate lives on Wheat Thins and ramen noodles. My excuse for not eating more fruit is that we don't have an easily accessible refrigerator in our room : P
November 21, 2002College and Stuff: I was just looking over some of the other colleges ge requirements, and it made me even more glad to be in warren college. We've definitely got the easiest ge's, and the most freedom in what we take. By the way Raymond, did u know david copperfield is going to be performing here in san diego on monday, tuesday and wednesday? -Mike What are mandarians?
November 22, 2002Oranges, right? I thought it was spelled "mandarin," but i could be wrong. ~Jocelyn
November 22, 2002Pretty much A citrus fruit. And I'll be darned if I know how to spell it. ![]() |
