Welcome To My Home...
February 25, 2003'Art Was His Life' I was thinking about stuff a while ago; that happens every now and then. Somewhere during the course of these thoughts, I concluded that if I was to do nothing but draw all the time, I'd be happy. So I tried it. Now, obviously, due to classes, psycotic breakdowns, and biological issues, one cannot draw all the time. But one can certainly draw a lot of the time - and one does. I try to take my sketchbook with me everywhere now. In doing so, I've found that Disneyland is actually a pretty cool place to go for sketching. There's enough eye candy to fill plenty of sketchbooks, provided you can find somewhere to sit. Not only that, but the wonderful fast pass system gives a person just enough time to finish a good sketch before allowing him take a quick break to hop on a ride. Now, I'm normally a relatively private person. I don't exactly like to invite a crowd to watch me work. But I most certainly wouldn't stop people from taking a glance if they manage to find me on their own. That's another reason why Disneyland makes for such a great place for sketching. The native population there consists mainly of those around the age of eight who all, undoubtably, have their own crayon masterpieces proudly displayed on their respective refridgerators. To such a crowd, anyone even pretending to draw becomes almost like a celebrity. I could be sitting there having the hardest time just drawing Mickey Mouse (and I was), and any kid passing by is like 'Wow! He's drawing! That's so good!' One girl even told me that I was producing 'the best picture of the Mickey Mouse statue' that she'd ever seen. I'm taking that one as a compliment for now. Of course, I'm nothing special to the kids' parents. They are well aware of the world and can tell instantly that what I am drawing, although possibly 'nice' could never pass as Mickey Mouse. But they need to entertain their child's excitement, and this is done by acting as if they were staring at Leonardo DaVinci, himself. Yes. Drawing at Disneyland is much fun. Not everyone, however, is quite as in touch with his surroundings as we would like. There were always people who'd wander over and glance at me, figure that I've come to Disneyland to balance my checkbook or something, and then decide to stand directly in front of me, between my subject and myself. I thought of these times as kind of mini breaks. Then there are the Disneyland employees, several of whom, I have found, are also artists. Our conversations have been minimal at best, considering my current lack of suitable subject matter for discussion and the fact that they're just 'casually passing by' while working. And they know that I can't draw Mickey Mouse. ![]()
February 25, 2003More of the Same So I've been drawing a lot this past week or so. In truth, I haven't been this excited about art in a long while. Actually, I haven't been terribly excited about anything in a long while, so this is like a little personal victory for me. Unfortunately, I have not been working on the art project that I'm supposed to be working on, but I've given it some deep thought, and come to the conclusion that I don't care. Nor, as you no doubt are already aware of, have I been updating my site (although I will withhold my conclusion on that matter). I've instead (along with filling my sketchbook), been wasting way too much time on another one of my crazy digital paintings. You will likely never see the contents of my sketchbook (as it probably should be), but as for the digital painting, I expect to have that up by this weekend. It's looking good. My online sketchbook may occasionally present new work, too. I believe I've added one thing since the last time I updated. Mac Users Rejoice. While we're on the subject, you'll be happy to know that the error previously preventing you from viewing my beautiful art has now been corrected. Behold. It's like experiencing a whole new site. ![]()
February 26, 2003You have joined the ranks... Ah. You have joined the ranks of those weird people who sketch stuff at random public places such amusement parks. I recommend a beret of some sort and circular, thin-rimmed glasses. Think Ed Harris from the Truman Show ; ) Ahhh, a masterpiece... -Victor
February 26, 2003I think it's awesome... Personally, I think it's awesome that you're getting into drawing as much as you are. As one of the worst artists in the history of bad artists, I can appreciate anyone with a talent for art. (now if you can do ceramics, then you're a god among men). And, as I have personally attempted to draw mickey mouse several times in my life, I can say that he isn't as easy to draw as he should be (did you ever notice that his ears always face the same way no matter what direction his head is turned?). Also, we should all go to disneyland together sometime. -Mike |
