Get The Picture?
My art teacher had stressed the quality of work he expected from us on our final projects. It should be rendered with extreme likeness, he said. If we were drawing cookies or vegetables, he wanted to be able to reach in and eat one. If we were drawing a landscape, he wanted to be able to step inside and walk around in it.

"Figuratively, of course," he felt the need to clarify.

Well, if he wants to go walking around in my picture, I say take a hike. After about twenty-two hours of work and some powerful cramps, I'm rather happy with how it turned out.

In related news, you'll notice that I've scanned and uploaded a plethora of new art work (including those from my college drawing course), which are now proudly displayed in the art section. I've also completely reformatted the pages so that works are now displayed by year rather than medium. I suspect a number of you would not have even noticed the change - but I assure you, it's there. And for the amount of work it took to change formats, it's going to stay.

News Time!
Hey kids! Let's see what societal evil we can blame computers for today!

RIAA. Let's see what they're
up to now. And they wonder why they have so many enemies. From what I understand, this college kid made a search engine to find files on the college network. The RIAA sued him and walked away with 12000 dollars - his entire savings account. Let's see them try to sue Google, now, since that is, essentially, the same thing - a search engine. Or, as the RIAA president would call it: "a sophisticated network designed to enable widespread music thievery."

Boycott the RIAA. www.boycott-riaa.com Whoops! How'd that link slip in?

Video Game Tax. Screw it. Let's just start mailing the government money for their stupid programs. Personally, I have a problem with Felix Ortiz's implication that all gamers are fat and lazy.

Cursive. Here's an article. "Handwriting experts fear that the wild popularity of e-mail, instant messages and other electronic communication, particularly among kids, could erase cursive within a few decades." I say it's about bloody time! While I completely disagree with pretty much everything the article asserts (all that nonsense about computers and email leading to the ultimate destruction of human civilization as we know it), I do wonder why we still use cursive. Whatever speed advantage it may have over real writing is certainly lost in legibility. Notice how anything half important always instructs you to "please print." I haven't even been able to write in cursive since about fourth grade after we were no longer required to use it. The hardest part of my SAT was writing that stupid paragraph in cursive.

Site Status
Because I know you care.

Sketchbook. I should let you know that, yes, I will indeed resume daily sketchbook entries... sometime. Probably July. I'm still sketching, just not anything I want to post right now. In the meantime, occupy yourself with the new and improved art section.

Journal. I haven't been feeling like writing entries much lately, so I'll probably change the home page format to more of the traditional, new-stuff-on-top, E/N or blog site that will be better suited for more frequent, briefer updates. I'll still keep the journal, but I haven't figured out exactly how I'm going to work it. We'll wait and see.

Halloween. I've been experimenting with different ideas for a new site design, but I haven't found one that really does it for me. Anyway, that's one thing I've been up to. Eventually, I'd like to work on some of the planning and construction for this year's Halloween haunt (which will happen) over the summer. Maybe with some help even.

Loops
Heh, cursive. What a waste of time. Nobody can read it, nobody wants to read it, and not many want to write it. Apparently it was originally intended as a standard form of shorthand... on "paper,"....with a "pen." It doesn't matter how short cursive is, lets someone do 45 words per minute without making their hand turn into a small stub. I'll take the keyboard thank you very much.

Cursive Schmursive...
The ACT has a paragraph to write in cursive just like the SAT. I literally had to erase and rewrite every word, because I have a tendency to write non-cursive Rs and Ts. It's rather frustrating to think that third graders have an easier time writing cursive than I do.

By the way, I love your 22-hour masterpiece and the cute little penguin. : )
