Welcome To My Home...
February 14, 2004The PMC I was finally able to check out the Pencil Mileage Club (an art club at Fullerton) this semester, thanks to my lovely afternoon schedule. It really sounds like they've got a lot planned, and if I can compel myself to become active in it, it looks like it can be a great experience. Life drawing sessions, film viewing, cafe sketching, zoo trips, and guest speakers were just some of the things on the list. And then there was mention of some gargantuan marathon type events like a 24 hour comic drawing activity and a weekend animation project that everyone seemed really excited about. Actually, come to think of it, everyone seemed really excited about everything. The sheer spirit and enthusiasm of the group is really something incredible. It seems like a fun bunch of people to be around. But at the same time, it can be a bit intimidating, since everyone already seems to know each other. Almost like that feeling you have when you're just laughing along with an inside joke that you don't actually get. This meeting, they talked a bit about what the club was and outlined some of the plans for the semester to give the newcomers (I have to assume I wasn't the only one new to the club - although it's difficult to say) an idea of what to expect. Some of the officers introduced themselves, and they, in turn, briefly described their function in the club (except for the club historian. Nobody's ever figured out what he's supposed to be doing). For this meeting, also, someone from the career center came by to give us bookmarks and talk about all the wonderful things they can supposedly do for us over there. As she finished up her pitch, she went to write her email address on the board. "Actually," she said on second thought, "I'll have you write the address on the board." She motioned toward one of the club officers in the front. "I don't want to get chalk dust on my suit." He took up the chalk, and a room full of art nuts watched him scrawl the letters across the board. It's not that anyone really cares whether the email address is written on the board neatly or not; it's just that people seem to expect more from artists. You draw a picture or two, and all of a sudden, you're expected to be artistic in every little thing you do. It just doesn't seem right that, as an arteest, our handwriting should be just as bad as everybody else's. And not to stereotype or anything, but I'd say that as a group, artists are even more critical about this type of stuff than anyone else. So when a top officer of the Pencil Mileage Club produces a jumble of barely legible letters at the corner of the blackboard, it is bound to draw some comments. "Give him a break, guys," one animator finally cried. "He's just a graphic designer." You could sense a sportive rivalry among groups through their laughter. "Ooh. That's harsh," someone from the back called out. "I mean, you didn't need to go and tell everybody like that. ![]()
