CSUF Pencil Mileage Club - Return to 24-Hour Comic 2005
(April 23-24, 2005) 24 Hour Comic of Titans: Photo Diary

Saturday, 10:45 am. So it begins.

We're all well-rested, excited, and ready tackle the task ahead of us. Note the smiles and general enthusiastic atmosphere. There's another group upstairs in the illustration room, but our core group has chosen to remain in the familiar setting of the animation room despite the promise of free soda and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches above.

Saturday, 2:45 pm. Barely started.

I'm right on schedule at four pages. Sara has left the planning stages of her comic and decided to actually start working on it. Alice is still pretending like she's trying to get her comic done in 24 hours at this point.

Markus has taken a break for lunch and in the process acquired a Burger King crown.

Upstairs in the illustration room, the other half of the group is diligently working. Christian has chosen a grid format for his comic and is cranking out pages at an astonishing rate.

Saturday, 3:50 pm. Still having fun.

I distract Sara with the camera long enough for Markus to steal some of her mix nuts.

We're still in good spirits, but not quite so energetic.

Notice that my 38-ounce tin of honey roasted peanuts is approximately a third depleted. I should mention that it is not wise to eat so many nuts within a six hour period. You'll feel it.

Possession of the Burger King Crown has passed to Mike Williams.

Saturday, 4:53 pm. Another hour.

I've fallen 8 minutes behind schedule. Alice has been working on the same page for about four hours. Nobody has any idea what Sara's doing.

We've started watching movies, apparently to increase our productivity.

Saturday, 5:24 pm. Still going...

Upstairs, Christian has abandoned his comic in favor of social interaction. Frankie continues to ink his insanely detailed scenes with an unwavering dedication.

Downstairs, only the number of empty beverage containers on the table has changed.

Saturday, 6:47 pm. And going...

I've managed to pull myself back on schedule. We may appear to be working on our comics, but right now, everybody's basically just waiting for Jennifer Wood's gallery show to finally open.

Mital has chosen to wait until the end to ink his comic. I know it looks like he's just been turning out blank sheets of paper all this time, but I assure you, he actually is drawing stuff.

Woah. Has Hayden been here the whole time?

The PMC officers have been working alongside us to put together film festival animations. You can see that the animation lab is also radiating with an energetic enthusiasm.

Saturday, 9:05 pm. Back to work

We're getting tired. People are starting to realize that the comic is not even half over, and the resulting mood is not hopeful. Alice may have moved on to her third page by now.

Upstairs in the illustration room, Frankie's the only one even trying to pretend to be working on a comic, anymore.

Saturday, 10:20 pm. Fatigue

I have collapsed to the floor at this point but still managed to gather enough strength to take this picture.

Saturday, 10:48 pm. Half way

It's late, but we're plunging ahead with a renewed energy down in the animation room.

Upstairs, things are a bit quieter.

Sunday, 12:20 am.

Hayden does not feel like he is working quickly enough and has resorted to black magic. It doesn't have any noticable effect.

It is steadily becoming harder to fake a sincere smile for the camera.

Sunday, 1:06 am.

Mital is now working on his second page 12, but he won't realize it until he's completed a full 25 page comic.

Sunday, 2:49 am.

Sunday, 5:19 am. The end is in sight.

I only have a few pages to go.

Sunday, 8:17 am. Early.

I've finished my comic with nearly two and a half hours to spare, and I show it off to whoever's still awake. Alice desparately wants to hide the brand of her tortilla chips from us. There will be no product placement at this 24-hour comic.

The survivors' shot - to contrast with the group shot Cliff took at the beginning. It looks like we all blinked. Actually, that's just how we looked, then. We were all blurry like that, too. I remember.

Only Sara and I finished a full 24-page, inked comic. Mital came close, but he didn't finish inking. He did have 25 pages drawn, though, due to his slight oversight at page 12. I think Alice may have made it to page 7.

This was my second successful 24-hour comic
