Haunts: 2001

Halloween Night:
The Event

By around 6:00, Victor and Mike had both arrived. Jen was still away doing whatever might have been more important than building a haunted house.

All of us who were present were running around like ants on a grill trying to get the haunt ready for trick-or-treaters. Pepper's Ghost happened to be giving us the most trouble - and it certainly didn't help that our ghost (Jen) hadn't arrived yet. The exterior sound system was also turning out to be somewhat of a problem, eventually forcing me to just hook up a portable stereo. The other main issue was lighting. Since it kind of needed to be dark before we could test our lighting, we were forced to wait until last to set that up.

We kept busy.

Around 6:30, I came bursting out the front door dragging three flood lights and an extension cord behind me and was greeted by a mass of people LINING UP at our cemetery entrance.

Guests line up before we open

This, for the reason that we usually get a total of about four trick-or-treaters each year, caught me a bit off guard. After throwing the lights into position and cranking up some music, I ran back inside and grabbed a robe. This thing was going to happen now whether we were ready for it or not.

Jen had obviously encountered some life threatening situation wherever she was which prevented her from joining us at the moment, so I called down my Dad to sit in as a temporary Pepper's Ghost. With that, the haunting began.

My dad as Pepper's Ghost We started to let guests through the haunt in small groups. Either Victor or I would open the door and invite the guests to enter and then the other would lead them through the haunt. Mike was handing out candy - and rubber lizards.

The first wave of trick-or-treaters excitedly pushed their way through the haunt, keeping us all pretty busy for a while. Activity slowed a bit by around 7:00 - which, coincidentally, happens to be when Jen arrived. Shawn finally arrived from his job a little after her. Unfortunately, he seems to have missed being in our group picture.

We kept ourselves entertained by hiding in the coffin and scaring guests as they approached and enjoying our chips and soda (Well, most of us were enjoying our soda. Some of us *er herm* seemed to be content with just spilling it all over my driveway).

After 8:00, only the most dedicated of trick-or-treaters remained to be seen, and by around 8:30, the streets were empty. According to our lizard count, about 80 trick-or-treaters had gone through the haunt.
